About us

about

Crossroads Care Surrey is a charity providing support to carers in the county. A 'carer' is someone who looks after a relative or frient with a significant health condition or disability, ranging from an older person with dementia to a child with cerebral palsy. Our aim is to give carers some precious time for themselves by providing them with regular breaks from their caring responsibilities.

We provide trained members of staff who take over those responsibilities and give carers a break - a chance to work, go shopping, meet with friends, look after their own health needs, or simply focus some uninterrupted time on the other children in the family.

Carers can take these breaks with peace of mind because we endeavour to send the same trained Crossroads staff member to their home each time, and all work to a detailed care plan which is regularly updated.

We treat each person who is cared for as an individual, and try to identify activities that they can enjoy. This ranges from talking an elderly person with Alzheimer's on a walk to see the swans or taking an autistic teenager rock-climbing.

Why your support is vital

"I was feeling guilty that I should have been able to cope being my husband's full time carer, however I was at the end of my tether. Someone suggested Crossroads Care Surrey, I rang them and within 24 hours I could see light at the end of the tunnel." (existing client - name withheld).

Many carers are on call "24/7", sometimes for years on end. This can be a real drain on the carer's physical and mental health. Your help enables us tho help the carers by giving our support quite often on a weekly basis. Crossroads currently helps 1,500 Surrey families, however, there are more than 600 families on our waiting list. If you would like to help us financially please use the 'donate' button, or if you would like to actively get involved, please look at our fundraising web site by clicking on 'fundraising' in the menu bar above.

A Leeds university study in 2006/7 showed that the service provided by the six million unpaid carers in the UK saved the government £87 billion a year. This was greater than the entire cost of the NHS that year. (reference: )
