Attendance Allowance
Attendance Allowance helps with extra costs if you have a disability severe enough that you need someone to help look after you.
Carers Allowance
You could get £81.90 a week if you care for someone at least 35 hours a week and they get certain benefits.
Carer's Credit
If you are eligible for Carer’s Credit, you can receive credit to help fill gaps in your National Insurance record.
This means you can take on caring responsibilities without affecting your ability to qualify for the State Pension.
Council Tax discounts for disabled people
You might be able to apply for a Council Tax discount or exemption if you or someone you live with is disabled.
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children may help with the extra costs of looking after a child who:
- Is under 16
- Has difficulties walking or needs to be looked after more than a child of the same age who does not have a disability
Emergency care planning service
At Crossroads Care Surrey, our emergency care planning service has been designed to put your mind at rest with 24/7 access to an emergency support service.
Financial support for home adaptations
Local council support
They provide a free service where an occupational therapist visits the person you care for’s home and advises which adaptations would be most beneficial for them.
Once the need has been assessed, you can then see whether the council will be able to provide any financial support towards the adaptations recommended. They will usually cover the cost of all small adaptations and they also have other financial assistance programmes such as Disabled Facilities Grants for bigger costs.
Help paying your water bill
If you are having difficulty paying your water bill, or to register for priority services.
Local authority
Your local authority is a good first port of call for carers, as a lot of the responsibility for social care rests with them.
Pension Credit
Pension Credit gives you extra money to help with your living costs if you are over State Pension age and on a low income.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
PIP can help with extra living costs if you have both:
- A long-term physical or mental health condition or disability
- Difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition
You can get PIP even if you’re working, have savings or are getting most other benefits.
The Herbert Protocol
The Herbert Protocol is a simple risk reduction tool to help the police in their search for people with dementia who go missing. It encourages carers or family members of adults living with dementia to collate information on those who are vulnerable on to the Herbert Protocol form, which can be given to the police if they go missing.
Universal Credit
You may be able to get Universal Credit if you are on a low income or need help with your living costs.
Winter Fuel Payment
You may be eligible to receive a Winter Fuel Payment for Winter 2024 to 2025 if you were born before 23 September 1958, you live in England or Wales and receive certain benefits.
