The challenges of unpaid caring whilst working
Often someone becomes an unpaid carer with little or no notice. It can be a major life change and can often be unexpected for your employee as well as for you.
What it means to work while caring
As a result of the nature of circumstances that lead to someone taking on caring responsibilities (often a serious condition or terminal illness in someone they are close to), you may be dealing with an employee who is both distressed and confused – and you will need to handle the situation with sensitivity.
Day-to-day caring can often create unexpected events that your employee has to deal with immediately. Caring can affect the mental health and well-being of your employees. Be aware and check in with them regularly.
The person needing care may require it for many different reasons, from being sick or having a physical illness, disabilities both physical and cognitive, and mental health problems or incapacity with substance abuse or age.
