Who and what is an unpaid carer?
An unpaid carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a family member or friend who cannot manage without their support. This is not the same as someone who provides care professionally, or through a voluntary organisation.
Unlike parents, many unpaid carers are invisible in the workforce, reluctant to discuss their personal situation and unaware of the support available to them. You are very likely to have carers working for you, whether they have disclosed this information to you or not.
Workers aged in their 50s and early 60s are more likely than any other age group to be juggling caring responsibilities and working.
